Silver Eagles
American Silver Eagle coins were authorized by Congress in 1985, and first minted in 1986 as the official silver bullion coin of the United States. Silver Eagles are one troy ounce of .999 fine silver. Often considered one of the most beautiful coins ever minted, the Silver Eagle’s design is based on A.A. Weinman’s “Walking Liberty,” introduced on the 1917 silver half-dollar. An eagle and shield, displaying American strength and pride, backs this moving scene of freedom.
As America's official silver bullion coin, the Silver Eagle coin's weight, content and purity are guaranteed by the U.S. Government. They also qualify for inclusion in your Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA). Gold prices and silver prices continuously update to reflect market prices. Silver American Eagle Coins
On November 24, 1986, the US Mint issued its first pure (.9999)
silver coin to compete with other global coins, such as the
Canadian Maple Leaf. The Silver Eagle was minted by the US Government after its release was authorized under the Liberty Coin Act, which was passed July 9, 1985. It quickly became the most popular bullion coin in the world due to its beauty, affordability, purity, and U.S. Mint certification.
Like its counterpart the
Gold Eagle, the Silver Eagle’s purity, composition, and weight are guaranteed by the US Government. The official silver bullion coin is issued only in one-troy once denominations (versus 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz denominations the Gold Eagle is available in). The Philadelphia, San Francisco, and West Point Mints have all been production facilities for the silver American Eagle.
In additional to the bullion, The U.S. Mint also produces proof and uncirculated versions for collectors. The powerful presence and historical significance of the Silver Eagle’s designs make it a great addition for collections. All versions have the same patriotic designs: the obverse of the coins depict Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic “Walking Liberty”, while the reverse of the silver coins feature John Mercanti’s powerful heraldic eagle, along with a mint mark on the proof and uncirculated versions.
In addition to being a work of historical art and a collectors’ item, the silver American Eagle is America’s leading
silver coin for investment portfolios. Since silver is a precious metal that is regularly in demand on the world markets, investors choose to add silver bullion coins like the Silver Eagle for financial security, stability, and liquidity. Also, one unique financial benefit of the American Silver Eagle bullion coin is that it can be used to fund IRA (Individual Retirement Account) investments.
