Dolly Madison was forced from the White House in August 1814 due to oncoming British troops.  The British troops set the White House on fire, but not before Dolly saved the Cabinet Papers and a beautiful portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart. The portrait can still be viewed today when visiting the White House.
