Early Release-First Strike
While the U.S. Mint doesn’t officially have an “early release” or “first strike” designation, the two primary grading services – PCGS and NGC – both give American Gold Eagle coins the “early release” or “first strike” designation if they are shipped within thirty dates of the commencement of shipping, or if the coin has documentation that “proves” that the coin was shipped during the first thirty days of a coin’s production. For instance, new American Gold Eagles typically go on sale each January 1st, thus any coins delivered between January 1 and January 31 qualify for the First Strike (TM) designation.
