The First Spouse Gold Coin program began in 2007.  These coins honor each of our nation’s First Spouses individually for their contributions to the United States of America.  The First Spouse Gold pieces are issued on the same schedule as the Presidential $1 coins honoring the US Presidents.  Each First Spouse Gold Coin is unique and features a design emblematic of that spouse’s life and work. Appropriately, when a President served without a spouse (Thomas Jefferson,  Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, etc.) the design is emblematic of Lady Liberty depicted on circulating coins in that era.
