Australian Perth Mint Gold Coins

Even though Australia’s Perth Mint is the continent’s oldest operating manufacturer of silver, platinum and gold coins, it is most renowned for its gold production. The mint opened in 1899 after the discovery of gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The founding father of the Perth Mint, Sir John Forrest a.k.a. “Big John” was insightful to foresee the importance of these gold deposits and the potential they could have on the Australian economy.

By 1957, the Perth Mint had produced the “purest gold of all gold,” when it released a proof plate of 999.999 parts of gold per thousand. In 2000, the Mint, located in the state of Western Australia, produced 4,500 tonnes of refined gold – a staggering 3.25% of the total gold produced in human history.

Today, the Australian Perth Mint produces beautiful pure gold bullion coins, pure gold proof coins, and pure brilliant uncirculated coins that are popular with investors and collectors around the world. These gold coins are .9999 fine gold and include the mint’s famous Year of the Tiger, Year of the Dog, and Year of the Pig series, as well as the Australian Kangaroo coin.
