American Gold Eagles
The Gold American Eagle coin is one of the official U.S. gold bullion coins, authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 and first issued in 1986. Each coin contains its full, stated weight of pure gold, with the balance consisting of silver and copper to increase the coin’s durability. The obverse design features a rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' full length figure of Lady Liberty. The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, features a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings. The American Gold Eagle contains 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.44% copper. The 1 oz coin weighs 33.930 grams(1 troy oz is 31.103 grams), has a diameter of 32.70 millimeters, and has a thickness of 2.87 millimeters. The Gold American Eagle is issued in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz denominations. The U.S. Mint produces proof versions for collectors. Gold American Eagle bullion coins are IRA-acceptable.
