Israel Silver Coins

Minting of larger denomination coins in silver started in Israel soon after independence in 1948, mainly for sale to collectors. All designs for Israeli trade coins are taken from ancient Jewish coins, those of the Jewish War (66–70) and of the Bar Kokhba War (132–135), and all are dated according to the Jewish year. (The Jewish year 5773 started on September 16, 2012.)

The first commemorative coin of Israel was issued by the Bank of Israel in 1958 to mark Israel's tenth anniversary. Early commemorative coins were minted in Utrecht, Berne, and Rome as well as Jerusalem, but since 1968 all commemorative coins are produced by The Holy Land Mint (Israel Coins & Medals Corp.)
