The Solomon Islands is a nation of almost 1,000 islands of various sizes in the southwest Pacific Ocean, east of Papua New Guinea and northeast of Australia. A former British protectorate, the islands were the scene of long, brutal campaigns between the Allies and Imperial Japan in World War II. The capital of the Solomon Islands is on the island of Guadalcanal, where the Allies stopped Japanese expansion. This proved to be a turning point in the war in the Pacific. The Solomons gained self-government in 1976 and full independence in 1978. The Solomons are a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
