The Kookaburra is a water fowl common to many parts of Australia’s coastline. The bird is a member of the Kingfisher family. It is said that the Kookaburra is often heard but rarely seen. Its cry is extremely distinctive, and is often compared to human laughter.
The Silver Kookaburra coin was first introduced by the Australian Perth Mint in 1990 as a 1 oz coin. In 1992, the Perth Mint expanded the Silver Kookaburra coin series to include 2 oz, 10 oz, and one kilogram sizes. In 2002 the Perth Mint added the ½ oz Silver Kookaburra. Initially, these were just proof coins, but non-proof coins are now available. There are no production limits for the 10 oz and 1 kilo sized coins.
