In 1849, the United States created the largest denomination of its circulating gold coins, the Double Eagle. This coin has a face value of $20, twice that of the Eagle. James B. Longacre had the honor of designing the new coin. This long-running series was replaced in 1907.

These coins have not been professionally graded, just separated by eye into different categories. Each coin measures 34mm across, and is made from .900 fineness gold for an Actual Gold Weight of .96750 troy oz. The obverse features the left profile of Lady Liberty, her tiara emblazoned LIBERTY. She is surrounded with 12 six-pointed stars, representing the original 13 colonies of America. The year-date appears below. The reverse has a heraldic American Bald Eagle clutching an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other. Thirteen stars above the eagle's head surround the legend "In God We Trust", with stylized sunbeams in the background. An ornate ribbon with the motto "E Pluribus Unum" is below the eagle's wings, and the legend "United States of American" occupies the upper border. Below the eagle is the denomination of Twenty Dollars.
