The $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle is a genuine icon of the US Mint, offered here in random dates, graded MS65 by either NGC or PCGS. Each Liberty Gold Double Eagle was minted between 1849 and 1907 from .900 fine gold with a actual gold weight of 0.9675 troy oz, and features James B. Longacre's majestic designs on the obverse.
The obverse features Liberty in a coronet crown ringed by 13 stars to represent the 13 original colonies with the year of minting at the foot of the coin. The reverse is dominated by Longacre's eagle and ribbon motif, although three subtle variants were produced. Liberty Gold Double Eagles struck between 1850-1866 feature “TWENTY D” but no motto on the reverse, coins minted 1866-1876 have “TWENTY D” and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST”, and between 1877-1907 the Gold Double Eagles face value is spelled “TWENTY DOLLARS”.
The three different designs have made $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles popular with collectors, as has their role in 19th century American history and these common date MS-65 $20 Liberty's are particularly fine examples.
