First released by the US Mint in 1986, the gold American Eagle coin is the first modern bullion coin to be authorized by the US Congress and is backed by the US Mint for its weight, content and purity. They are made of durable 22 karat gold (91.7% pure), a much more scuff-resistant material than the pure (99.9% or better) forms of gold bullion.
Each Gold American Eagle coin features a beautiful design that captures the American character and vigor. The coins bear a slightly changed design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens of the American Double Eagle coins minted between 1905 - 1907.

The ¼ oz Gold American Eagle Coins feature Lady Liberty walking in front of the rays of a rising sun, with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Behind her is the United States Capitol Building.
Reverse/Back
The reverse features a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings.
