The South African Mint

The South African Mint is one of the world’s leading mints and over the years has earned a worldwide reputation for its appealing designs, exceptional craftsmanship and the high standard of its quality coins, winning numerous international awards in the process. The Mint is a wholly owned subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).

Obverse and Reverse

The gold Krugerrand was designed by Otto Schultz and in 1967. The obverse features the portrait of Boer Statesman Paul Kruger, who was a four-term President of the old South African Republic. “South Africa” as well as the gold content is inscribed in both Afrikaans and English on the obverse of the coin. The reverse, designed by Coert Steynberg, features one of Africa’s national symbols, the Springbok.

The reverse of ½ oz gold elephant coin features the lone bull. The obverse displays the portrait of matriarch and also includes mintmark of the South African Mint “SAM”.

The 1/2 troy ounce Krugerrand has a gold content of 91.67% and a copper content of 8.33%. The coin has a weight of 16.985 grams, and a diameter of 27.00mm.

The 1/2 troy ounce proof Gold South African Natura coin has a 99.99% or 24-karat gold content, weighs 15.553 grams and has a diameter of 27.00 millimeters.

The Kruger National Park is nearly two million hectares in size? This is about the size of Israel or Wales. The park includes approximately 147 species of mammals, 507 species of birds, 114 species of reptiles, 49 species of fish, 34 species of amphibians, and 336 species of trees. The fence between the Kruger National Park and Mozambique in the east has been removed allowing the animals access to move freely between the two areas.
