The 2012 1 oz Proof Silver Koala- Australian Opal Series is the first release in this new series from the Perth Mint. These .999 fine silver coins have a limited mintage of only 8,000 and are sold out at the mint.
The obverse of the coin features a stylized double panel design. The inner panel has a uniquely patterned background with Ian Rank Broadley's bust of Queen Elizabeth II. The outer panel is inscribed with "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA," and "1 DOLLAR." The reverse is also uniquely styled in a double panel design. The inner panel depicts an image of a koala on a eucalyptus tree. This portrait is created out of pure Australian Opal. The outer panel features the moon, eucalyptus blossoms and leaves, and the Southern Cross. The year, weight and purity are all listed on the reverse as well.
These coins come in a display box with a light that turns on when the case is opened, which shines on the opal and symbolizes moonlight on the koala. The coin is delivered in a detailed and colorized shipper. The 2012 1 oz Proof Silver Koala- Australian Opal Series is the first of eight animals to be highlighted in this series.
