2012 1 oz Proof Silver Koala- Australian Opal Series.
The first release in the Perth Mint's new Australian Opal series, the 2012 1 oz proof silver Koala comes from a mintage of only 8,000. The display case for this coin features a light inside that turns on when the case is opened highlighting the opal. It is meant to symbolize the moonlight shining on the koala.
This side shows the profile of Queen Elizabeth II as created by Ian Rank-Broadley.
The inner panel of this coin is done in pure Australian opal and shows a koala in a gum tree. The outer panel shows eucalyptus leaves and blossoms. It also shows a new moon and the Southern Cross, a star group only visible from the Southern hemisphere.
The Koala is one of Australia's most iconic animals. The Koala is nocturnal and sleeps for 18 hours a day.
