Product Details

The 2012 1 oz proof silver Whale Shark coin is from the Discover Australia series, and is a fan-favorite here at Gainesville Coins. These coins are struck to highlight the Australian landscape and wildlife. The series features five animals: the Whale Shark, Red Kangaroo, Green and Gold Bell Frog, Goanna, and the beloved Kookaburra. These coins are struck in .999 fine proof quality silver. A maximum mintage of 7,500 is set for each coin in the series. These limited coins each come with their own official certificate of authenticity and display box from the Perth Mint.

The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley's image of Queen Elizabeth II, with the inscription, "Elizabeth II, Australia," and, "1 Dollar," surrounding the Queen. If you turn the coin over, you will see the great Whale Shark swimming at you with its mouth wide open. With the beautifully colored Ningaloo Reef in the background, this coin is sure to delight collectors young and old!

The Whale Shark is the world's biggest fish, but is considered harmless. A filter-feeder, it has been around for an estimated 60 million years. With a lifespan of around 70 years, they feed on plankton and small fish.

Curious about how a bank wire transaction works?

Orders totaling $2000 or more qualify for payment by bank wire. To pay by bank wire, a temporary hold of 5% of the purchase price will be placed on the debit or credit card supplied at check out (10% for international customers). Bank wire instructions will be emailed once the hold has been authorized.

Bank wires for the full amount must be initiated by the end of the next business day. Once the wire payment is received, Gainesville Coins will release the hold of the 5% authorization fee.
