The obverse shows Spanish conquistador Vasco Nunez de Balboa; the first European to reach the Pacific Ocean by crossing the Isthmus of Panama and founding the first European settlement on the continental Americas in the area that is now Panama. VN CVARTO DE BALBOA (one quarter Balboa) is written above de Balboa's morion helmet. The reverse features the Panamanian coat of arms and the year the coin was struck, the edge is milled.
