The obverse of this Mexican Silver 1 Peso shows the bust of Mexican rebel leader and Catholic Priest José María Morelos, who served as General Captain to the Mexican War of Independence. Morelos served from 1810-1815 before being executed December 22, 1815 for treason. He is considered a national hero to the country of Mexico, with the city of Morelia being named after him for his swift and brave leadership. The reverse of the coin has Mexico's coat of arms which depicts the image of an eagle with a snake in its beak standing on top of a cactus in the Mexican desert.
