The French Great Painters Series, minted from 2007-2011, celebrated eight artistic icons. The 2010 French 10 Euro Pablo Picasso Silver Coin is the sixth installment of the French painters series, featuring the co-founder of the
Cubist movement, Pablo Picasso. In .434 ounces of fine silver,
Picasso's portrait appears beside two colorized paint brushes. The
coin itself is a rectangle shape.
Minted by the Monnaie de Paris in France, the series pays tribute to modernist painters. Picasso lived from 1881-1973, and in his 92 years became known as the greatest painter of the 20th Century. He was an accomplished Spanish painter, draftsman and sculptor. Alongside his partner Georges Braque, Picasso founded the Cubism style. He constantly questioned various styles and approaches, even in his own work.
The obverse of the coin depicts Pablo Picasso's effigy, opposite two colorized paint brushes. He appears as an aged man with softer features hidden behind shadows. The denomination of 10 euro is inscribed below his portrait. The reverse features one of Picasso's most famous works, the “Affiche Vallauris, faune.” Picasso created this drawing in 1948.
