The 2014 1 oz Gold Somalian African Elephant continues the African Wildlife Series with a new elephant design. In 1 troy oz of .999 fine gold, this coin is finished in proof condition and packaged in a protective plastic capsule by the Bavarian Mint. Although they are minted in Germany, Gold Somalian Elephants are issued as legal tender in Somalia.
Since its inception in 2004, the African Wildlife Series has depicted new designs of elephant families each year. Although the series' title suggests that it will feature several animals of the African Serengeti, elephants are the only animal to ever have been displayed. Its annually-changing design makes this series highly popular among collectors.
This 2014 1 oz Gold Somalian African Elephant portrays a family of three elephants within the inner panel of the coin. The large animals are seen grazing among tall grass while the moon hangs in the balance. The outer panel reads, “African Wildlife,” “Elephant” and “1 oz Au 999.”
Somalia's Coat of Arms appears on the reverse of the coin, depicting a shield held up by two leopards. Two spears entwined in a banner support the leopards. The outer rim of the coin is decorated, with an inscription inside of it that read, “Somali Republic” and “1000 Shillings.”
