The Year of the Monkey is here for 2016! Following the Dragon (2012), Snake (2013), Horse (2014), and Goat (2015) in the Lunar cycle, those born in the Year of the Monkey are said to be cunning, clever, confident, and versatile. Yet again, the Royal Australian Mint has added to its Lunar calendar series with the 2016 1 oz Lunar Gold Monkey coin. Each of these .9999 fine gold coins contains a total of 1 troy ounce of pure gold, and is given a face value of 100 Dollars.
A small monkey is depicted on the reverse design. It is positioned on the branches of a tree, surrounded by flowers in full bloom. "1 oz .9999 Au" appears along the bottom rim, indicating the coin's weight and purity specifications. The Chinese character meaning "Monkey" is placed in the field to the left of the monkey, while the year-date "2016" is found against the rim above the monkey's head.
Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. She is surrounded by inscriptions that include Her Majesty's name, the issuing country "AUSTRALIA," and the denomination "25 DOLLARS." A bullet point separates each inscription. In an outer ring, the various animal signs of the Chinese zodiac are shown in order, separated by phases of the moon. The coin's edge is reeded.
The 2016 1 oz Lunar Gold Monkey is a well-conceived means of capitalizing on the popularity of the Chinese Lunar calendar theme. In addition to the broad appeal of the Lunar theme and the attractiveness of this year's Monkey design, each of these gold coins packs the punch of 1 troy ounce of actual gold weight (AGW). Bring the vibrancy of the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Monkey with these .9999 fine gold coins!
