2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the Gold Eagle coin series, which has developed into one of the world's most trusted sources for government-issued gold. Beyond being backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, the 2016 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle (Brilliant Uncirculated) combines ravishing artistic quality with one-half troy oz (1/2 troy ounce) of pure gold content. Each of these legal tender coins has a denomination of 25 Dollars and is struck from .917 fine gold.
Gracing the obverse is Augustus Saint-Gaudens' famous design of Lady Liberty, circa 1907. With the U.S. Capitol building in the background, Liberty strides confidently forward, olive branch and flaming torch in-hand. The legend "LIBERTY" is found at the top rim, with the year-date "2016" to the right of Miss Liberty. Beams of sunlight emerge from beyond the horizon, and Liberty's hair flows in the wind. Fifty stars line the outer rim, symbolizing the 50 states of the Union.
The reverse features a family of bald eagles. Created by Miley Busiek in 1986, this is the first U.S. coin design to use multiple eagles. While the mother eagle cuddles together with her eaglets in their nest, her companion returns to the nest carrying a small branch for their home. "1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD~25 DOLLARS" inscribed at the bottom rim indicates the actual gold weight (AGW) and the denomination of the coin. The familiar mottoes "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are to the right and left of the eagles, respectively. The edge is reeded.
Whether you are investing in gold or (like many collectors) are captivated by the eye-pleasing and symbolically meaningful design, the Gold Eagle is worthy recipient of such admiration.
