Expanding upon its various coin series featuring native wildlife, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has introduced the first coin in its Predator Series, the 2016 1 oz Silver Cougar coin. Struck from extra-pure .9999 fine silver, these one-ounce silver coins are an attractive collectible that combines precious metal purity with beauty. Each issue in the series will be limited to a total mintage of just 1,000,000 coins! In addition, they are legal tender with a designated face value of 5 Dollars.
The reverse design uses an interesting combination of devices. A detailed image of a cougar leaping toward its prey is shown at the center of the design. The issuing country "CANADA" is inscribed at the top rim, with the purity "9999" placed just below. "FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR" curls along the bottom half of the rim, with a small maple leaf privy mark found above. The field uses a radial line finish, a new feature the RCM introduced in 2014 that adds security and visual appeal.
The obverse is graced by Susanna Blunt's right-facing effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen's name is inscribed against the rim to the left, while the denomination "5 DOLLARS" follows along the top rim. The right rim bears the Latin abbreviation "D. G. REGINA," meaning "By the Grace of God, Queen." The year of issue "2016" is found at the bottom rim. The obverse uses the same attractive radial line finish, which creates a light-diffracting effect and is very difficult to counterfeit.
The Predator Series from the RCM is a four-coin series, providing enough depth for collectors to get interested without becoming overly exhaustive. Moreover, the maximum mintage of 1,000,000 coins for each issue in the series provides a great incentive for collectors. Nonetheless, these coins are still struck from extra-pure .9999 fine silver and each contain 1 troy ounce of pure silver content.
