The 2017 1/2 oz Gold Canadian Maple Leaf Coin is another option offered by the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) for buyers who are looking for a more modest purchase than the full one-ounce bullion coin. These coins are struck from the same .9999 fine gold as the 1 oz version, but each contains a total of one-half troy oz (0.5 troy ounce) of pure gold. Each coin is legal tender designated with a face value of 20 Dollars.
On the reverse, a detailed depiction of a maple leaf is shown. Created by Walter Ott, an artist at the RCM, this iconic image has graced the coins of the Maple Leaf series for more than three decades. The purity "9999" is placed on either side of the leaf, while "FINE GOLD 1/2 OZ OR PUR" is inscribed along the bottom rim. The issuing country "CANADA" appears at the top rim.
Susanna Blunt's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right is featured on the obverse. In addition to "ELIZABETH II" along the top rim, the denomination "20 DOLLARS" and the year-date "2017" are found at the bottom rim. The edge is reeded, and the finish is augmented by a beautiful radial line pattern that also serves as an anti-counterfeiting measure.
