Like several other world mints, the Royal Canadian Mint began striking fractional sizes of its Gold Maple Leaf coin shortly after its debut in 1979. It subsequently introduced fractional sizes of this flagship coin, including the 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.
Each of these coins is legal tender with a face value of 5 Dollars. In terms of actual gold weight (AGW), each coin contains one-tenth troy ounce (0.1 oz) of pure gold and is struck from .9999 fine gold.
Artist Walter Ott is credited with creating the classic maple leaf image that appears on the reverse of the coin. The leaf is flanked on either side by the purity, dividing the number "9999." Rim inscriptions include the issuing country "CANADA" along the top and the coin's weight specifications at the bottom rim, "FINE GOLD 1/10 OZ OR PUR." The field of the coin uses an eye-catching radial line finish that the Royal Canadian Mint has patented.
The obverse design, created by Susanna Blunt, is a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II facing right. The same radial line pattern fills the background. It is both aesthetically appealing and an important anti-counterfeiting measure. "ELIZABETH II" is inscribed above while the denomination "5 DOLLARS" and year-date "2019" are placed at the bottom rim. The edge uses a reeded pattern.
Collectors and investors around the world have trusted the Gold Maple Leaf for decades, and its penetration into the international bullion markets is impressive. Now, these extra-pure .9999 fine gold coins are even more accessible to the average investor and the general public thanks to its fractional size.
