Bacterium Precipitates Gold Grains Out of Mine Waste Water

Nature has published an update to two different research projects involving certain bacterium that live in the waste water from gold mines. These bacterium convert the toxic chemicals into useable compounds and precipitate the dissolved gold into microscopic nuggets, that form a "halo" around them.

While it would take decades to process the average mine wastewater pool, it may prove less costly than traditional toxic cleanups, and provide a solid gold side benefit as well.
