A treasure hunter with a metal detector has discovered a cache of 1,471 silver coins in southern Romania. Most of the coins are Ottoman, dating from 1500 to 1600, but there were eight medieval Hungarian coins, with the other 48 coins being a mix from medieval Poland, Lithuania, France, Spain, Saxony, Nuremberg and Lubeck. The coins were found about a foot and a half deep.
The man who found them, Dumintru Banta, is a licensed treasure hunter and turned the nearly four pounds of silver coins over to a local museum, where they will be authenticated. If found to be genuine, Mr. Banta will receive 30% of their value. The director of the museum called the cache a significant find.
