Gulf News reports on a raucous scene in the old city of Purnia in Bihar province, when excavation equipment digging foundations for a new temple strew ancient silver coins all over the site. As villagers swarmed the site, frantically elbowing each other while pocketing as many silver coins as they could, the pit was carefully examined and eight earthenware pots with over 5,000 more silver coins were found.

The ancient coins bore Arabic writing, pointing towards them dating from the Mughal Empire in India, meaning that they are hundreds of years old. Authorities note that the area was the district capital during the Mughal period and site of the governor's fortress.
