Italian border police at the Ponte Chiasso crossing with Switzerland on Easter Sunday stopped an Italian family in a small car, because the car was obviously overloaded. Initially finding nothing, a false panel was found in the floorboard, which, after being removed, revealed one tonne in unmarked gold bars wrapped in newspaper.
The 53 year-old driver, who is said to be the legal representative of a Swiss company, has been detained on suspicion of money laundering. He was traveling with his wife and three young children from their second home in Switzerland when he was apprehended. Authorities placed the value of the gold bars at €4.5 million (nearly $6 millon)
