American Silver Eagles – NGC Graded

The American Silver Eagle coins in this category have been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). NGC, along with PCGS, are considered the top tier, or “gold standard,” in coin grading. Graded Silver Eagles are encapsulated with an insert that describes the coin's grade. Both NGC and PCGS use a modified form of the Sheldon Scale of Coin Grading, a 70-point scale for grading coins developed by Dr. William Sheldon in 1949.

Most, if not all coins in this category will be graded from Mint State (MS)-60 to MS-70, as well as the Proof designation. It should be noted that Proof (PF) is not a grade, but rather a type of coin.

American Silver Eagles are the official United States 1 oz silver bullion coin. They are among the best known 1 oz silver bullion coins on the market today. Sales of American Silver Eagles have risen sharply following the 2008 financial crisis with total sales hitting records every year since. 2008 sales of silver eagles were 21,817,736. 2012 sales of silver eagles were 40,970,000.

Silver Eagles were authorized by Congress in 1985 and first minted in 1986. The design on the coin’s obverse is based on the “Walking Liberty” design by Adolph A. Weinman which was used on Walking Liberty Half Dollar coins minted from 1916 to 1947. Silver Eagles are currently minted by the West Point Mint and the San Francisco Mint.
