The British Virgin Islands are a group of over 50 islands in the Caribbean Sea, though only about fifteen are inhabited. Discovered by Columbus in 1493, the islands were not permanently settled until the Dutch landed there shortly after 1600. Warfare between Dutch, Spanish and English led to Britain taking control of the islands in 1672. The islands were split from other British possessions in the Caribbean to become a separate colony in 1960, gaining autonomy in 1967.
Since becoming self-governing in 1967, the British Virgin Islands have invested in tourism and financial services, becoming one of the more prosperous areas of the Caribbean. Although they have used the US dollar as their currency since 1959, they have minted commemorative coins since 1973, which are also considered legal tender.
