1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leafs

The Canadian Maple Leaf Coin was first minted in 1979 to provide an alternative to the Krugerrand during the boycotts of South Africa. It is not only the official gold bullion of Canada but also a globally adored coin. Starting in 1983, the gold Maple Leaf was the world’s first gold bullion coin to be minted in .9999 purity, and has remained at this exceptional quality ever since. In some cases the Canadian Maple leaf coin has exceeded its own quality standards by creating special edition .99999 gold purity coins. Naturally, every coin is minted in only Canadian mined gold with virtually no base metals.

This coin likes to be kept up to date and has some special edition runs that reflect the current status of the world. The 2009 coins boast the Olympic symbol in honor of Canada's hosting of the Winter Olympics in 2010.

The 2013 coin marks the debut of a new anti-counterfeiting measure. Using a special laser, the Royal Canadian Mint micro-engraved two tiny nested maple leafs on the reverse of each 2013 1 oz Gold Canadian Maple Leaf Coins. When viewed under magnification, the last two digits of the mint year can be in seen in side the two micro-etched leaves. This will become the new standard security measures for the Canadian Maple Leaf Coin.

The standard obverse feature of the Canadian maple leaf coins is the Susanna Blunt effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, with the Queen's name inscribed above. Below the bust is the denomination of the individual coin.

The reverse features the iconic symbol of Canada, the Maple Leaf. Flanking the leaf to either side is the purity while the weight is proclaimed in English and French below.

Due to the softness of gold, the coins are prone to handling marks. Some people find this a nuisance when they should see the marks as a testament to the coin's remarkable purity.
