The Republic of Liberia is located in West Africa, bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea and the Ivory Coast. Liberia is the only country in Africa founded by the United States colonization while occupied by natives. Currently, Liberia continues to recover from the aftermath of their two successive civil wars. In 1943, U.S. currency was declared as legal tender, replacing the British West African monetary system. Since Liberia does not have its own mint, their silver commemorate and collectible coins are produced by various private mints worldwide. Commonly used mints are the Pobjoy Mint, Franklin Mint, and the San Francisco Mint. Silver Liberian coins are recognized for their unique designs and intricate features. Liberian coins vary in conditions of Matte (normal circulation), Special Uncirculated (polished or proof like), and Proof (mirrored finish).
