The Perth Mint was founded in 1899 as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint and passed ownership to the Government of Western Australian in 1970. Perth Mint is a well-known assayer and refinery of ethically supplied precious metal products. The 2010 Great Warrior series was released by the Perth Mint as one of their lines of specialty coins. Four coins were released in this series: a Roman Legionary, a Viking, a Knight, and a Samurai. Each comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity, and a presentation display case.
On the obverse of the coin is a profile of Queen Elizabeth II designed by artist Raphael Maklouf. The reverse of the coin proudly displays a full-color knight, heavily-armed, bearing two swords and a mace. The portrayal includes heraldic motifs, originally used to identify knights in battle. The knight is a renowned battle figure from the middle ages through the early Renaissance. Knights were the protectors and gentlemen warriors of the Medieval period. They followed a strict line of rules to protect the weak, obey their King, be chivalrous with the ladies, and, above all, to serve their God at all times. Knights were often called by their Lords to fight in feudal land battles, or by their King to fight in grander-scale wars.
