Details & Specifications

Buy the cuddly 2012 ½ oz Silver Koala at Gainesville Coins. The Perth Mint’s Silver Koala bullion series is a favorite among collectors and investors. The design for this series changes every year, and the 2012 design shows an adorable koala doing what it does best, lying motionless high in a Eucalyptus tree. This year design is by famed artist Aleysha Howarth.

The Silver Koala was introduced by the Perth Mint in 2007. The Perth Mint has many gold and silver bullion programs that feature Australian wildlife including the Silver Kookaburra and the Gold Kangaroo. The Silver Koala bullion program has the distinction of having no mintage limits.

Silver Koala coins come individually encased in a plastic capsule from the Perth Mint. The Silver Koala is minted in ½ oz, 1 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilo sizes.

Koala Fun Facts

The koala is a marsupial native to Australia. The Koala’s closest living relative is the wombat. The koala diet is nearly exclusive to eucalyptus leaves. The koala has a very slow digestive system, and rests motionless for much of the day. The Koala population has been hard pressed, and the Koala faced extinction in the early 20th century due to hunting for the Koala’s pelt. Koala numbers remain dangerously low due to habitat loss, disease and urbanization.
