The coin features Walking Lady Liberty on its obverse. This design was erected by Adolph A. Weinman to depict a patriotic personification of the United States. She is resplendent with symbolism from her flag-like garments to her forward stride.
On the reverse is the U.S. Seal featuring an adult American bald eagle. His wings are outstretched to depict is American pride, and he carries an olive branch in his talons to depict peace. Thirteen stars hover over the bird's head to represent the thirteen original colonies.
