On the obverse of the coin, there is a profile inscribed of the Spanish explorer, conquistador and governor, Vasco Nunez de Balboa. Balboa is well known for being the first European who lead an expedition from the Western hemisphere to the Pacific. He also gave this Panamanian currency it's name. The Panama Silver 1/2 Balboa has “Medio Balboa” inscribed across the top of the reverse. The obverse features Panama's Coat of Arms with “Republica de Panama" across the top and the year the coin was minted at the bottom.
