Buy 2011 1 oz Silver Fiji Taku .999 Pure Silver - Produced by the New Zealand Mint
Featuring one of Fiji's main turtle species, the 2011 1oz Silver Fiji Taku .999 Pure Silver Coin by the New Zealand Mint is one of the mint's most popular coins. Carrying a $2 face value, the Fiji Taku is minted yearly to draw attention to the critically endangered species. Nearly 3,000 Takus, or Hawksbill Turtles, are native to Fiji, making the island one of the most Taku-abundant places in the world.
Takus typically grow up to 1 meter in length, and weigh 80 kg when they are fully grown. The species became endangered due to human fishing. People often hunt the Hawksbill Turtle for its beautiful shell, as seen on the 2011 Fiji Taku Silver Coin. The sea creature gets it name from its hawk-like beak, and can live for 30-50 years.
The coin's obverse features the turtle swimming, showing off its stylized shell. He is surrounded by bubbles and the inscriptions, "Fiji Taku" and "Fine Silver .999 1 oz." The reverse is Raphael Maklouf's image of Queen Elizabeth II, along with the mint date, "2011."
