The 1996 American Silver Eagle Coin is a of the key-date in the Silver Eagle coin series. Minted only from U.S.-mined silver, this coin is made from .999 fine silver and revives the “Walking Liberty” design of A. A.Weinman. This design is deemed one of the most popular images to have ever appeared on U.S. coinage.
Since their launch in 1986, American Eagles have become a popular, leading bullion coin in the American market. Almost everyone's short list of favorite coins include the Silver American Eagle.
The obverse bears the 1986 rendition of Adolf Weinman's "Walking Liberty" design. First seen in 1916 on the US Half Dollar, Liberty strides toward the rising sun with her flowing gown bearing the stars and stripes of the American flag. The legend, "Liberty," is inscribed across the upper edge of the coin, with the emblem, “In God We Trust,” on the bottom right. The mintage date is struck below her striding feet.
John M Mercanti, the U.S. Mint sculptor and engraver, designed the reverse using the Great Seal of the United States as inspiration. The American Bald Eagle wears a patriotic shield on its chest as it holds an olive branch in one talon, and three arrows in the other. A scroll with the motto, “E Pluribus Unum,” is held in its beak. It also carries the weight, denomination, and country of origin- the United States of America.
