Buy Australian Silver Florin - Random Date - (.34 oz of Silver)
Australian Silver Florins minted from 1910 to 1945 are 11.31 grams of sterling silver, a combination of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Each coin minted from 1910 to 1945 0.34 troy ounce silver florin equals 24 pence or two shillings. These florins are the same size as the British florins, 28.5 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm thick. This was the standard of sterling silver until 1946 when the silver content was dropped to 50% of the Australian coins. Minted from 1910 to 1963, these coins were circulating currency in Australia.
The Australian Silver Florins come with several different designs depending upon year. Each obverse features a picture of the reigning monarch, including the monarch's name and title around the rim of the coin. The reverse typically depicted the Australian coat of arms, a kangaroo and an emu holding a shield, with the British Royal Crown above it.
These florins were originally minted at the British Royal Mint because Australia was still under British rule. In 1916, the Australia mint took over production of the florins. Production stopped in 1963 after Britain adopted decimalization and replaced all its sterling silver coinage.
