The 2009 1 oz Silver Koala showcases Australia's best-known marsupial and is a part of the Perth Mint's Koala bullion coin series. The Perth Mint Koala series is a continuing series that displays a new design of the Australian Koala on the reverse of the coin annually. These 2009 Silver Koalas are minted from .999 fine silver, and have a diameter of 40.60 mm.

The obverse of these Silver Koalas bear the crowned portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, facing right, and inscribed, "Elizabeth II, Australia 2009," and, "One Dollar." The reverse, and the side everyone wants to know about, features an amiable illustration of an adult Koala, perching on a tree branch. The reverse of the coins reads, "1 oz 999 Silver," and holds the, "P," mint mark of the Perth Mint.

Australian Koalas, although often referred to as "bears" have no relation to the lumbering carnivores that roam the wider regions of this world. In fact, Koalas are herbivores that love eucalyptus leaves, live in trees, carry their young in a pouch on their stomachs, and do not like getting their fur wet.
