Designed by Ralph J. Menconi, this round featuring the 29th U.S. President was struck in the early 1960's by the Medallic Art Company with.77 oz of Silver . The Warren G. Harding Presidential Art Medal is part of a high relief series that depicts former U.S. Presidents so vividly that the designer (Ralph J. Menconi) earned the nickname “Sculptor of Presidents”. Pres. Harding was a former newspaper publisher and U.S. Senator and coined the phrase “Founding Fathers” in a Republican National Convention speech. Despite several scandals involving his appointees, he was instrumental in bringing an end to World War I, instituting a federal welfare program and cutting unemployment in half. Pres. Harding's term was cut short after 17 months when he unexpectedly collapsed and died during a trip in 1923, leaving his Vice-President, Calvin Coolidge, to succeed him.
