The decimal "Franc" became France's new monetary value after being established at the French Revolutionary Convention in 1795. The Franc was used until 1999 when France replaced it with the Euro.

The obverse of the 5 franc coins features a woman reminiscent of Lady Liberty, holding a bag of seed and sowing a field with her hair billowing out behind her while she strides barefoot across the earth. The sun rises behind her and the words "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE" are struck around the rim of the coin.

The reverse displays the denominational value of 5 Francs above an image of wheat, acorn branches, and olive branches intertwined together with they year of the coin below. "Liberte Egalite Fraternite," or Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, are struck around the rim.
