The obverse of the coin features the famed Indian Head design from the Pre-WWII era buffalo nickel by artist and sculptor James Earle Fraser. Believed to be a composite of several different people, Fraser's rendition of a Native American stoically looks forward, his braids trailing down the side of his face. The motto "LIBERTY" is engraved along the upper right portion of the rim. The year of issue "2006" rests upon the shoulder of the Native American, with the engraver mark, "F" for Fraser, just below.

The reverse of the coin also borrows from James Earle Fraser's nickel, depicting the iconic North American Bison. The coins legend runs along the upper portion of the rim and reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", with the motto "E. PLURIBUS UNUM", Latin for "Out of many, one", just below it. Located in the lower field of the coin is the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST", as well as the coins denomination "$50." Placed along the lower portion of the rim are the coins weight and purity specifications "1OZ .9999 FINE GOLD"
