The monument was erected in 1910 to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of Mexican Independence from Spanish rule and sits atop a 36 meter (118 ft) high column. The actual statue of the angel measures 6.7 meters (22 ft) and is coated with 24 karat gold. In 1925, the Heroes of the Mexican Independence were laid to rest in the mausoleum at the base of the column.
