Although South Africa is primarily known for its signature gold coin, the Krugerrand, the country also produced its own silver coinage well into the 20th century. These 80% pure silver coins have an actual silver weight (ASW) of .3858 troy ounce, and are designated with a face value of 1 Rand.
The obverse pictures the right-facing bust of Jan van Riebeeck, the 17th-century Dutch Colonial Administrator of the South African territory. He is often celebrated as the "Founding Father" of South Africa. Along the rim to the right of the effigy, "SUID-AFRIKA" is inscribed, meaning "South Africa." The year-date is adjacent to the inscription.
The reverse depicts a springbok in mid-leap. The springbok is a species of antelope that has long been an iconic symbol of South African culture and heritage. The face value "1 RAND" is placed beneath the jumping springbok, while the motto "SOLI DEO GLORIA" (Glory be to God alone) is inscribed to the left.
Jan van Riebeeck remains an endearing symbol of South Africa's Dutch (sometimes called Boer) heritage that traces back nearly 400 years. The country's National Coat of Arms is even an adaptation of the van Diebeeck family's Coat of Arms. In addition to these coins' interesting historical legacy, the South Africa 1 Rand silver coins also are struck from .800 fine silver, offering a low-cost option for acquiring legal tender silver coins.
