Austria is home to some of the world's most admired cultural expressions, from Vienna's love of music to the country's German-influenced cuisine and architecture. Accordingly, the country's silver coinage from the past has many of these unique cultural themes well-represented in their designs and symbolism. Between 1955 and 1973, the country used its 25 Schilling coin as a vehicle for various commemorative designs. Each of these coins was struck from .800 fine silver (80% pure silver) with a fine silver content of .3344 troy ounce, giving each coin a gross weight of .418 troy ounce.
The reverse designs found on these coins will vary, depending upon what dates are randomly chosen from our available inventory at the time of your purchase. These designs are commemorative in nature, celebrating some historical figure, important event, or iconic landmark from Austria's past. Each design includes rim inscriptions detailing the subject in the design, as well as the year-date.
Two different obverse designs may be found on these coins. Both feature a ring of shields in the center of the design that bear the coat of arms of Austria during different eras. In one variety, the denomination "25" is placed in the middle of the ring, with "SCHILLING" below; in the second variety, a dragon is at the center of the 3/4 circle, with a larger Austrian shield and the face value "25 SCHILLING" appearing at the bottom-left. Both designs have the issuing nation "REPUBLIK OSTERREICH," or "Republic of Austria," inscribed around the outer rim.
There is an interesting dual benefit to collectors when it comes to old European silver coins, such as these random date Austria 25 Schilling silver coins: not only do these coins contain a considerable amount of fine silver content, but they are also historical in nature, adding to their collectible appeal. Whether you are interested in .3344 troy oz of actual silver weight (ASW) or are a collector of European coins, these silver 25 Schillings are a great way to add some international flavor to your collection!
