The obverse has the legend "REPUBLIK OSTERREICH" and features a Lipizzaner horse and rider from the world famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria. Lipizzaner horses are renowned for the highly controlled stylized moves they are capable of mastering and the Spanish Riding School has been teaching rider and horse to move elegantly together for more than 430 years.

On the reverse of the coin, the Austrian shield is below the denomination, "5 SCHILLING," and the date on either side of the shield. Laurel branches curve around the bottom rim up towards the date.
