The obverse is graced by the left-facing effigy of the Spanish conquistador, Vasco Núñez de Balboa. Wreaths of laurel run along the rim on either side of the bust. Along the top half of the rim, "UN CUARTO DE BALBOA" is inscribed in bold letters, which translates to the coin's denomination, "one-quarter of a balboa." The Panamanian Coat of Arms, which depicts an eagle perched on the national shield, appears in the center of the reverse. "REPUBLICA DE PANAMA" runs along the top rim, and the year of issue can be found at the bottom rim. The coin's purity, "LEY 0900," and its weight, "GR. 6.25," are placed to the left and right of the insignia, respectively.
The explorer Balboa received the distinction of appearing on these Panamanian silver coins due to his exploits as the first person in recorded history to cross the Isthmus of Panama in 1513, sailing west from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
