The Florida Everglades are one of America's greatest natural features, encompassing the largest wilderness area anywhere in the country east of the Mississippi. While most national parks endeavor to preserve the beauty of a natural environment, the Everglades National Park is actually tasked with protecting a fragile ecosystem. The 2014 5 oz Silver America The Beautiful Everglades National Park coin celebrates this wonderful site and the wildlife it protects. Struck from .999 fine silver, each of these ATB series coins contains five troy ounces of pure silver. They are legal tender designated with a face value of 25 Cents.
The reverse design shows the distinctive anhinga, also known as a snakebird or darter, stretching its wings in the foreground. A spoonbill is shown wading through the marshy waters behind, while further in the distance the water stretches to a forest of trees. The Everglades are home to an array of different flora and fauna, including the American crocodile, the Florida panther, and the manatee. The legend "EVERGLADES" appears along the top rim, while the year-date "2014" is placed at the bottom rim. "FLORIDA" and the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are inscribed to the left and right of the date, respectively.
On the obverse, John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington facing left has been adjusted to better resemble the original 1932 design for the quarter dollar. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is boldly inscribed above, while the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR" is found along the bottom rim. "IN GOD WE TRUST" appears to Washington's right. The legend "LIBERTY" is placed to the left of the bust.
In addition to its conservation goals, the Everglades National Park attracts around a million visitors each year. It is the third largest national park located in the Lower 48, behind only Death Valley and Yellowstone. It was established in 1934 and remains one of the Western hemisphere's most well-protected natural sites. Honor the beauty and importance of Florida's swamps and marshes with the 2014 5 oz Silver American the Beautiful Everglades National Park coin from Gainesville Coins!
