Gainesville Coins is thrilled to offer the 2015 $50 1 oz American Gold Eagle, graded a perfect MS70 by the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC)! This coin also received the special designation "Early Release," indicating that it was received for grading within 30 days of being issued by the U.S. Mint. This stunning 22-karat (.917 fine) gold coin has a gross weight of 1.091 troy ounces (33.93 grams) for a total of 1 troy ounce of actual gold weight (AGW). As legal tender, it is designated with a face value of 50 Dollars.
The coin's obverse is a slightly modified version of the timeless Lady Liberty design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Originally used for circulating $20 gold coins during the early 20th century, this design shows Liberty striding forward, a torch held high in her right arm and an olive branch in her outstretched left arm. Liberty stands upon a hill, radiant light emanating from behind her, with the Capitol building visible in the distance in the bottom left corner. Fifty stars run along the outer rim. The legend, "LIBERTY," is found along the top rim.
The reverse design, the work of contemporary artists Miley Busiek, shows a family of bald eagles at their nest. The mother eagle sits in the nest, her wing protecting a pair of young, while the father eagle is approaching the nest from the left, wings flapping and an olive branch in his talons, symbolizing America providing safety for its families. The issuing country "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" curls along the top half of the rim, while "1 OZ. FINE GOLD~50 DOLLARS" is placed along the bottom rim. The mottoes "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are located to the left and right of the main image, respectively.
The American Gold Eagle is not only one of the most trusted gold coins in the world, it has also appealed to collectors for the historical background and artistic beauty of its design. In addition, some collectors are drawn to Early Release coins because they believe these coins exhibit a sharper strike than later coins made with the same dies. At any rate, the MS70 grade this coin received is the highest possible attribution!
